Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Toni Kroos and Luka Modric have all been named in the 2016 FIFA FIFPro World11, as voted by their fellow professionals. The Team of the Year was announced during the Best FIFA Football Awards in Zurich. Cristiano Ronaldo, who takes his place in the three-man forward line, is included in the line-up for a 10th successive year.
Meanwhile, Sergio Ramos earned his place in the side for the seventh time, having previously made the cut in 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. Elsewhere, it’s not the first time that the other three madridistas have been named in this team, with Marcelo featuring for a third time, whilst this is the second year that Modric and Kroos have been recognised. The other members of the 2016 FIFA FIFPro World11 line-up are: Manuel Neuer, Dani Alves, Gerard Pique, Andres Iniesta, Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.
Ramos: “It’s a magical day”
“It’s a magical day for all of the nominees and this is a reward for the work and effort we put in day in, day out. I’m proud to once again have been named in the Team of the Year. My life is dedicated to football and we’re rewarded with accolades like this one”.
“I’m grateful that my fellow professionals have recognised my work. We’re doing a very good job and we’re going to try to treat our fans to more silverware, which is the most important thing”.
Marcelo: “We want to continue winning silverware”
“It’s been an outstanding year, but we want to continue winning silverware. We’re showing our hunger in training and in the games. We’re in great form right now and that’s a result of our excellent pre-season and the hard work that we put in during the international break. In the end things have worked out for us, but we’ve had to suffer to get to where we are”.
Modric: “I’m very proud”
“This award means a lot, I’m very proud to be here for a second successive year. I want to thank everyone who voted for me, this is the reward for the work I’ve put in this year with Real Madrid and the national team. In 2017, the most important thing for me is to remain healthy, to avoid injury and I hope to give my all in each game to help the team win lots of trophies, just like we did in 2016”.
“Kroos: It’s an honour to collect this award”
“Individual awards aren’t as important as the team ones. The panel for this award is made up of other players and it’s an honour to receive recognition from them, because they know what it’s all about out on the pitch. I hope that this season turns out to be just as good as last year. We’re competing on three fronts and we want to win them all, which will be very tough”.
